Marriage - Just a Piece of Paper? by Katherine Anderson, Don Browning
'Marriage -Just a Piece of Paper?' goes beyond common polarities in addressing timely marriage issues head-on. Skillfully weaving together scores of revealing interviews -with adults and children, with well-known professionals and ordinary citizens -the book poignantly captures the varied lives and voices, hopes and heartbreaks, and successes and failures that make up the reality of marriage in Western society today. Tied in with a major film documentary this volume expands and deepens the discussion about marriage in the West. The book is timely as the New Zealand government contemplates broadening policies about relational unions outside of traditional marriage. n nReviews n nAlmost everyone aspires to marriage something these books go to nsome lengths to explain, albeit in completely different ways. As nthe title suggests, I Like Being Married is an unabashed ncelebration of marriage; it's fluff but enjoyable fluff. Leach, nexecutive director of Orbis Books, and Borchard, author of the nchildren's book series The Emerald Bible Collection, have ncollected bits and pieces quotes, stories, traditions, and even ntop-ten lists that show why people take pleasure in matrimony. The nquotes and stories come from both celebrities (e.g., George Bush, nWinston Churchill, Celine Dion, Natasha Richardson, C.S. Lewis, and nMel Gibson) and regular Joe and Jane Does. Charming and well nedited, it contains just enough variety in length and subject to be ninteresting, yet it is also cohesive. Public libraries should npurchase. The companion book to a PBS documentary that aired Feb. n14, Marriage Just a Piece of Paper? is far more serious in tone and nscope. Although it is also a smartly chosen mlange of quotes from ndifferent people, it focuses on the societal changes that have led nto increased divorce rates, cohabitation, and single motherhood ndespite the beneficial aspects of marriage. Sociologists, npoliticians, ministers, and the occasional person on the street are nall given a chance to explain whether they think marriage nespecially as it relates to the raising of children is in decline nand, if so, what might be done to stop that decline. Editors nAnderson and Brian Boyer worked on the documentary as managing neditor/producer and executive producer/ director, respectively, and nDon Browning is a professor of ethics at the University of Chicago nDivinity School. Given that the effects of divorce on children is a nmajor topic (see, e.g., Judith Wallerstein and others' The nUnexpected Legacy of Divorce and E. Mavis Hetherington and John nKelly's For Better or for Worse) and that many patrons probably nwatched the PBS special, this book should be on all public library nshelves. One caveat, however: the lack of an index makes it less nuseful as a research tool. Pam Matthews, MLS, Shaker Heights, OH nCopyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
