George Chapman, president of the National Party since 1973 and deeply committed to the party's affairs for many years before, has played an especially influential part in the shaping of New Zealand's political destiny. Often, his has been a quiet, behind the scenes role of which few have been aware. But at other times, as occasion has demanded, he has been involved in courageous public confrontation with his own party if he has felt that its future or fundamental principles were being jeopardised or compromised. When early in 1980, he had to consider whether to offer himself as president again for a term which will inevitable take him through the 1981 General Election, George Chapman undertook a deep and almost solitary reappraisal of his own and his party's future. The years of lightning is, to a large extent, the result of this assessment. In affirming his willingness to serve the party again, at tremendous personal cost and sacrifice (few realise that it is an unpaid post), he sets down for the first time his personal perspective of the 1970s, of the years which set the scene for the events of the decade, and of the directions he feels New Zealand must take in the even more uncertain years which lie ahead. George Chapman's book is an unusual blend of autobiography, political history and social analysis. It begins with his own first (and unexpected) nomination as president in May, 1971 and moves through the Holyoake, Marshal and Kirk years into the Muldoon era ... The author describes in detail the shakeup to party reorganisation which he undertook when first taking office in the months following Norman Kirk's triumphant election success, the appointment of new officials, the selection of candidates like Marilyn Waring and Derek Quigley, and the successful 1975 campaign ... What really happened during the Marshall-Muldoon leadership struggle which ended in Rob Muldoon becoming Prime Minister? .... -- Inside front cover.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0618/9101/8826/files/1238aa_571793a1-1a08-427e-bc90-3892f91f6e27.jpg?v=1764149717
political-notebooks-by-john-a-lee-2048m
Political notebooks by John A. G. Scrimgeour and John A. Lee remember the crisis years 1930-40 by Colin Graham Scrimgeour, John Alexander Lee

The Great Depression -- in New Zealand as elsewhere a period of distress, mass unemployment, breadlines, political and big business skulduggery and at times, violence and repression. In broader view the period can also be seen to be the catalyst for dramatic social change, for challenging the order of a powerful elite: demands for a greater sharing of wealth and opportunity that were pitted against the inertia of a system which put moneyed interests before the basic welfare of people. Prominent in the turbulent tide of events in this country were two men, one a Methodist parson, the other a Labour Party MP, both committed to improving the common lot. The parson, C.G. (Uncle Scrim) Scrimgeour, had established the Auckland City Mission and was feeding and clothing Depression down-and-outs as best he could. The MP, John A. Lee, was spurring his Party to its first term of government. The two men first met one day in the early thirties when the imperfections of the world's trading systems were beginning to assume chronic proportions: inextricably tied as they were (and still are) to profitability, the systems incapable of adjusting to a time of over-production and under-consumption. Millions overseas, and tens of thousands in New Zealand were made redundant and went hungry, though raw materials and food abounded. And, as the authors tell in this book, it was all largely unnecessary. There were solutions. It was the refusal of Coates's Coalition Government to seek out those solutions and to put people before banks and overseas bond holders that set the stage for Labour's landslide victory at the 1935 election. It was their shared concern for the socialism of fair distribution that drove Lee and Scrim together, and as friends they supported each other through the numerous tribulations which that concern meant -- the jamming of Scrim's 1ZB Friendly road radio station on the eve of the '35 election; antagonism towards Lee from Labour Government administration; Scrim's banning and eventual sacking as first Controller of Commercial Broadcasting; Lee's dramatic expulsion from the Labour Party. The Papers is a unique record by two participants in those crisis years--Years in which the character of the country's future as a welfare staqte was largely formed. Many of the events the authors reconstruct have never been widely revealed before, let alone published. The story is told in the form of a statement and comment between Scrim and Lee, as it was in their voluminous correspondence from which the book grew ...--Inside front over.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0618/9101/8826/files/509e_1_7782c4b8-9f3f-4329-8b86-154d7e07f4bd.jpg?v=1764150649
my-life-by-bill-clinton-615f
My Life by Bill Clinton

President Bill Clinton's My Life is the strikingly candid portrait of a global leader who decided early in life to devote his intellectual and political gifts, and his extraordinary capacity for hard work, to serving the public. The inviolability of the American mainland, breached for the first time since 1812, led to extravagant proclamations by the pundits. It was a new world-historical turning point. The 21st century, once greeted triumphantly as marking the dawn of a worldwide neo-liberal civilization, suddenly became menaced. The choice presented from the White House and its supporters was to stand shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism or be damned. Tariq Ali challenges these assumptions, arguing instead that what we have experienced is the return of History in a horrific form, with religious symbols playing a part on both sides: 'Allah's revenge,' 'God is on Our Side' and 'God Bless America.' The visible violence of September 11 was the response to the invisible violence that has been inflicted on countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Palestine and Chechnya. Some of this has been the direct responsibility of the United States and Russia. In this wide-ranging book that provides an explanation for both the rise of Islamic fundamentalism and new forms of Western colonialism, Tariq Ali argues that many of the values proclaimed by the Enlightenment retain their relevance, while portrayals of the American Empire as a new emancipatory project are misguided. Editorial Reviews Review Ali's style is vigorous, his narrative compelling, showing that the short-term, self-interested and oil-greedy policies of the British and Americans in such countries as Egypt, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Iran must make our much-vaunted ideals of democracy and equity seem like a bad joke.-Karen Armstrong, The Times The Clash of Fundamentalisms is well worth reading ... it shows that the harshest critics of fundamentalism are often exponents of a rival fundamentalism.-John Gray, Independent In this timely and important book, Tariq Ali puts the events of September 11 into sweeping historical perspective. As we have come to expect from him, he is lucid, eloquent, literary, and painfully honest, as he dissects both Islamic and Western fundamentalism.-Howard Zinn It will not open doors at the White House because it makes for uncomfortable reading ... a wide-ranging and powerfully argued critique, that gives pause for thought.-Financial Times ... urbane, highly intelligent and vividly written.-Richard Sennett, Times Literary Supplement The book is an outstanding contribution to our understanding of the nightmare of history from which so many people are struggling to awake, and deserves serious engagement and consideration. Ali broadens our horizons, geographically, historically, intellectually and politically ... His mode of history telling is lyrical and engaging, humane and passionate.-Anthony Arnove, The Nation [Ali] finds little to distinguish between the organised violence of the United States and that of those who oppose it ...-Sydney Morning Herald About the Author Tariq Ali is a writer and filmmaker. He has written more than a dozen books on world history and politics-including Pirates of the Caribbean, Bush in Babylon, The Clash of Fundamentalisms and The Obama Syndrome-as well as five novels in his Islam Quintet series and scripts for the stage and screen. He is an editor of the New Left Review and lives in London.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0618/9101/8826/files/553d_1_20ae7fb0-2b7b-45b1-9879-233f7d481d1d.jpg?v=1764153920
stupid-white-men-and-other-sorry-excuses-for-the-state-of-the-nation-by-moore-michael-569x
Stupid White Men: And Other Sorry Excuses for the State of the Nation by Michael Moore

Stupid White Men tells you everything you need to know about how the great and the good screw us over. From ministers the line of authority runs back to the people through Parliament. From chief executives the line of authority runs forward to the staff who deliver the policy and services determined by the ministers (with help). Is it time for a restatement of the conventions and principles governing this crucial relationship? Some think so. Others think not but worry that there have been major changes in the way it operates. Still others see no crisis and yet others say there is no significant difference.
