Even presidents. Now that the Oval Office has become the Oral Office, can young people look up to the leader of the free world without imagining a hand around the back of their heads? In Sex Terror, the follow-up to It's a Queer World, his critically acclaimed anarchic romp through the institutions of normality, Mark Simpson dispenses with the monkey business of sexuality and finally takes on the organ grinder itself: sex. Simpson argues that we put far too much faith in sex these days, and that in fact sex is messy, confusing, frustrating, and ultimately disappointing. If you're doing it right. Subjecting our saucy new god to his scornful satire, Simpson takes on every new shibboleth about doing the nasty: it must be hot, it must be frequent, it must wake the neighbors, and it must be Who You Are. In Sex Terror, Mark Simpson explains: why bad sex is better than hot sex why the best relationship he's ever had is with a neighbor he's never met why anal sex 'doesn't work' why hypocrisy is the best aphrodisiac why gay men are terrified of women's privates why Bill Clinton DIDN'T lie about That Woman why films like Independence Day and Stargate are even more obsessed with men's bottoms than he is Along the way he is cruised by 'Galen' from Planet of the Apes in a Beverly Hills restaurant, gets worked up with Alexis Arquette over Stephen Baldwin's butt, discovers that Eminem's lyrical homophobia barely disguises a rampant homophilia, complains that Brad Pitt is a one night stand that won't leave, confronts Henry Rollins with those 'gay'rumors, and has an hilarious bathetic encounter with a glory hole in a Parisian sex club.

Ten gay men gather for a dinner party, but the conversation leaves a lot unsaid. On the outside, Tena Clark's childhood in rural Mississippi in the 1960s looked like a fairytale. Her father was one of the richest men in the state; her mother was a beauty. The family lived on a sprawling farm and had the only swimming pool in town. Tena was given her first car - a navy blue Camaro - at twelve. Behind closed doors, her parents' marriage was a swamp of alcohol, rampant infidelity and guns. Adding to the turmoil, Tena understood from a very young age that she was different from her three older sisters, all beauty queens and majorettes. She didn't want to be a majorette - she wanted to marry one. On Tena's tenth birthday, her mother walked out on her father for good and Tena was left in the care of her black nanny, Virgie, who became Tena's surrogate mother and confidante - even though she was raising nine of her own children. It was Virgie's acceptance and unconditional love that gave Tena the courage to stand up to her domineering father, the faith to believe in her mother's love, and the strength to challenge the bigotry that defined her world and be her true self. How We Met is based on a collection of 'How We Met' stories - those lovely stories couples love to tell (and we all love to hear) about how they got together. The author's theory: that these stories of how couples meet - the romantic, absurd, serendipitous, convoluted, scandalous, breath-taking moments of connection - help to weave their lives together. Partly as 'proof' that they were meant to begin this couple-journey, and also because in each retelling they go back to those first falling-in-love feelings and rekindle the passion. The theory is based on a hunch, which itself is based on nothingmore than the author's observations of watching couples as they talk. It focuses on the decline into staleness of the relationship between Craig and Paul, two men who have been together for ten years. Craig gets a jump start from an unexpected affair, and finds himself forced to analyze the relationship he has had with Paul. This brings tensions to the lives of all three characters, who face questions about the meaning of gay relationships, and what they can learn from the lives of other people they meet. Editorial Reviews Review From Freyberg also examines many broader themes about being gay in a heterosexual world the environment of legal and social prejudice in which both Craig and Paul grew up, the more liberal attitudes they subsequently experience, the devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic, Craig s longstanding involvement in the Presbyterian Church, and the relationships of each of the central characters with their own biological family members. For as long as she can remember, twelve-year-old Emily Windsnap has lived on a boat. And, oddly enough, for just as long, her mother has seemed anxious to keep Emily away from the water. But when Mom finally agrees to let her take swimming lessons, Emily makes a startling discovery -- about her own identity, the mysterious father she's never met, and the thrilling possibilities and perils shimmering deep below the water's surface. With a sure sense of suspense and richly imaginative details, first-time author Liz Kessler lures us into a glorious undersea world where mermaids study shipwrecks at school and Neptune rules with an iron trident -- an enchanting fantasy about family secrets, loyal friendship, and the convention-defying power of love. Everybody has secrets, of course, but mine's different, and it's kind of weird. Sometimes I even have nightmares that people will find out about it and lock me up in a zoo or a scientist's laboratory. It all started in seventh-grade swim class, on the first Wednesday afternoon at my new school. I was really looking forward to it. Mom hates swimming, and she always used to change the subject when I asked her why I couldn't learn. But we live on a boat! I'd say (we actually do). We're surrounded by water! You're not getting me in that water, she'd reply. Just look at all the pollution. You know what it's like when the day cruises have been through here. Now stop arguing, and come and help me with the vegetables. She had kept me out of swimming lessons all the way through grade school, saying it was unhealthy. All those bodies mixing in the same water. She'd shudder. That's not for us, thank you very much. And each time I asked her, that would be that: End of Discussion. But the summer before I started middle school, I finally wore her down. All right, all right, she sighed. I give in. Just don't start trying to get me in there with you. I'd never been in the ocean. I'd never even had a bath. Hey, I'm not dirty or anything -- I do take a shower every night. But there isn't enough room for a bathtub on the boat, so never in my life had I been totally immersed in water. Until the first Wednesday afternoon of seventh grade. Mom bought me a special new bag to carry my new bathing suit and towel. On the side, it had a picture of a woman doing the crawl. I looked at the picture and dreamed about winning Olympic races with a striped racing suit and blue goggles just like hers. Only it didn't happen quite like that. When we got to the pool, a man with a whistle and white shorts and a red T-shirt told the girls to go change in one room and the boys in the other. I changed quickly in the corner. I didn't want anyone to see my skinny body. My legs are like sticks, and they're usually covered in scabs and bruises from getting on and o? The King of the Sea. That's our boat. I admit it's kind of a fancy name for a little houseboat with moldy ropes, peeling paint, and beds the width of a ruler. . . . Anyway. We usually just call it King. Julia Cross smiled at me as she put her clothes in her locker. I like your suit, she said. It's just plain black with a white stripe across the middle. I like your cap, I said, and smiled back as she squashed her hair into her tight, pink swimming cap. I squeezed my ponytail into mine. I usually wear my hair loose; Mom made me put it in a scrunchie today. My hair is mousy brown and used to be short, but I'm growing it out right now. It's a bit longer than shoulder length so far. Julia and I sit next to each other sometimes. We're not best friends. Sharon Matterson used to be my best friend, but she went to St. Mary's. I'm at Brightport Junior High. Julia's the only person here that I might want to be best friends with. But I think she really wants to be best friends with Mandy Rushton. They hang out together between classes. I don't mind. Not really. Except when I can't find my way to the cafeteria -- or to some of the classes. At those moments, it might be nice to have someone to get lost with. Brightport Junior High is about ten times bigger than my elementary school. It's like an enormous maze, with millions of boys and girls who all seem to know what they're doing. You coming, Julia? Mandy Rushton stood between us with her back to me. She gave me a quick look over her shoulder, then whispered something in Julia's ear and laughed. Julia didn't look up as they passed me. Mandy lives on the pier, like me, only not on a boat. Her parents run the video arcade, and they've got an apartment above it. We used to be pretty good friends until last year. That's when I accidentally told my mom -- who told Mandy's mom -- that Mandy had showed me how to win free games on the PinWizard machine. I didn't mean to get her in trouble but --well, let's just say I'm not exactly welcome in the arcade anymore. In fact, she hasn't spoken to me since. And now we've ended up in the same swim class at Brightport Junior High. Fabulous. As if starting a new school the size of a city isn't bad enough. I finished getting ready and hurried out.

Eighteen-year-old Riley Middleton should be far away from home, about to start her freshman year of college on a full-ride scholarship she earned with her unmatched skills on the drums. But drumming is all that's keeping Riley's spirit alive?she has to make this work, and if that means ignoring both Romeo's taunts and his dangerously smoldering looks, she'll find a way to stay in the band. As Luminescent Juliet's fame increases, Riley finds herself caught among the egos and magnetism of her bandmates. If she wants to play the drums, she must find a way to ignore the sparks that threaten to ignite the tensions simmering onstage, ready to explode into a raging fire of passion at any moment. Dill has always been branded as an outsider due to his family heritage as snake handlers and poison drinkers, an essential part of their Pentecostal faith. But after his father is sent to prison for sexual abuse of a young parishioner, Dill and his mother become real pariahs. His only two friends are Travis, a gentle giant who works at his family's lumberyard and is obsessed with a Game of Thrones-like fantasy series (much to his alcoholic father's chagrin); and Lydia, who runs a popular fashion blog that's part Tavi Gevinson and part Angela Chase, and is actively plotting her escape from Redneckville, Tennessee. As the three friends begin their senior year, it becomes clear that they won't all be getting to start a promising new life after graduation. How they deal with their diverging paths could cause the end of their friendship. Until a shattering act of random violence forces Dill to wrestle with his dark legacy and find a way into the light of a future worth living. Editorial Reviews Review Praise for The Serpent King: Zentner explores difficult themes head on--including the desire to escape the sins of the father and the fragility of happiness--while tempering them with the saving grace of enduring friendship. --Starred Review, Publishers Weekly Characters, incidents, dialogue, the poverty of the rural South, enduring friendship, a desperate clinging to strange faiths, fear of the unknown, and an awareness of the courage it takes to survive, let alone thrive, are among this fine novel's strengths.
