In Jaguar, a young woman recently back from a stint in the Peace Corps believes that she's the cause of the breast cancer that led to her sister's double mastectomy. A wife and mother, mourning the loss of her son by burning the boxes that contained his life, must also come to terms with a visit from her son's lover and her husband's infidelity in Things You Can Expect From Your Loved Ones. In Quite Cold In Alaska, a promising road trip up the California coast turns into a meditation on familial expectation and disappointment when the addled matriarch goes missing. And in the eponymous title story, Most Of Us Are Here Against Our Will, which won an award in The Atlantic Monthly, an hysterical young man, unable to move past a torturous family secret, finds help and solace in a therapy group full of others just like him. Peopled with reluctant porn stars and directors, failing actors, a misguided cheerleader, a murderous, vengeful writer, and many others, these nine stories are, according to Bret Easton Ellis, direct, emotional, and compulsively readable. Mary Gaitskill, of Don't Cry and Veronica, has said that they are about an engaging variety of nuts and sluts, and you actually read them wondering what is going to happen next. Levinson's talent is as big as the state about which he's writing. I'm a big fan. And Edmund White, of A Boy's Own Story, has called Levinson's world acetylene hot...There's something as raw and frightening and egotistical in these men and women as in Homeric heroes. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn as our guides, we undertake a journey through Africa and Asia to meet an extraordinary array of women struggling under profoundly dire circumstances: a Cambodian teenager sold into sex slavery; an Ethiopian woman left for dead after a difficult birth; an Afghan wife beaten ruthlessly by her husband and mother-in-law. But we meet, as well, those who have triumphed - a formerly illiterate fistula patient who became a surgeon in Addis Ababa; an Indian woman who saved herself and her children from prostitution - and those who make it their work to provide hope and help to other women: the victim of gang rape who galvanized the international community and created schools in rural Pakistan; the former Peace Corps volunteer who founded an organization that educates and campaigns for women's rights in Senegal. Through their stories, Kristof and WuDunn help us see that the key to progress lies in unleashing women's potential. They make clear how so many people have helped to do just that, and how we can each do our part. Throughout much of the world, the greatest unexploited economic resource is the female half of the population. It presents all the basic facts and ideological issues concerning the position of women in the major religious traditions of humanity: Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Taoism, and tribal religions. A special feature of the book is its phenomenological approach, wherein scholars examine sacred textual materials. Each contributor not only studies her religion from within, but also studies it from her own feminine perspective. Each is an adept historian of religions, who grounds her analysis in publicly verifiable facts. The book strikes a delicate balance between hard fact and delicate perception, the best tradition of phenomenology and the history of religions. It also demonstrates how much religions may vary over time. Contributors are Katherine K. F. K. Fisher and explores the distinct roles grandmothers played in their lives. IP. Editorial Reviews From Publishers Weekly This engaging collection of short pieces of autobiography, fiction and poetry, some published previously, deals with the grandmother-granddaughter relationship. According to Kack-Brice, a California clinical social worker, memories of grandmothers, whether positive or negative, are a powerful connection to childhood, and the exploration of these reminiscences can lead to deeper self-knowledge. Many of the selections, including the poetry of Marge Piercy and Linda Hogan and memoirs by Ethel Barrymore and Maya Angelou, evoke grandmothers as figures of strength and inspiration. Other contributors, such as M.F.K. Fisher and Stephanie Patterson, describe more troubled relationships with their grandmothers. A touching selection by Jewelle Gomez recalls how her grandmother accepted her lesbianism. Exercises for the reader who wants to write about her own grandmother are provided by the contributors. Photos not seen by PW. Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Booklist This is a collection of tender yet often tough and sharp poems and stories about grandmothers. The prose includes excerpts from novels (e.g., from Margaret Atwood's Bodily Harm and Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings) as well as a goodly selection of narrative memoirs. The poetry is accessible and direct, ranging from Toi Derricote's piercing reminiscence of her light-skinned grandmother's vulnerability to racism to Sharon Olds' searching eulogy for her dead grandmother on what would have been her birthday. This could have been a sappy assemblage of greeting-card sentiments, but editor Kack-Brice has done her work well. The love expressed by the writers here is unwavering, yet it is love based on clear-sighted knowledge. In place of a small literary culture-nationalist, realist, Pakeha and masculine in outlook-we now find a variety of styles, kinds, voices. In response to these changes, writing about New Zealand literature has also changed. Since the mid 1980s, criticism in New Zealand has sought to come to terms with feminism, culture studies, postmodernism, post-colonialism indigenous writing. This book collects new essays by writers and critics who have taken part in this process of assimilation and debate. The aim is not to announce a new orthodoxy or to impose some imported critical methodology on local writing. Rather the book shows how some well-known New Zealand authors-Mansfield, Sargeson, Hyde, Frame-can be read and reinterpreted from a number of critical perspectives and how different types of writing can be freshly reconsidered. The essays are lively, various, challenging. They re-examine New Zealand's past, question long-held assumptions, analyze the contemporary scene, and indicate new directions.
