Figures in Silk by Vanora Bennett
A sumptuous wedding feast, two advantageous marriages and a blessing from the golden king \n\nWhen silk merchant John Lambert marries off his two beautiful daughters, their fortunes are set to change forever. Elder daughter Jane starts a notorious liaison with Edward IV, while her sister, Isabel, as the new silkweaver to the court, becomes privy to its most intimate secrets. Could they hold the keys to power in this time of uncertainty? \n\nVanora Bennett brings to life a time of passions and politics, a time of turmoil and tension, a world in flux and a country up for grabs. \n\nReviews\n\nSet against the tumultuous backdrop of 15th-century London, this\nlatest from Bennett (Portrait of an Unknown Woman) centers on the\nlives of two very different sisters. Beautiful, flighty, and bored\nwith her new husband, Jane Shore quickly catches the eye of the\nnewly crowned Edward IV. Her younger sister, Isabel, follows a\ndifferent path when she marries into the house of Claver, one of\nEngland's finest silk-trading enterprises. When tragedy strikes,\nIsabel finds herself playing an unexpected role in the family\nbusiness and discovers a new life among the city's silk women and\nwealthy merchant class. Additionally, a chance encounter with a\ncharismatic stranger forces Isabel to decide where her love and\nloyalties ultimately lie. Mysterious, romantic, turbulent, and rich\nin historic detail, Bennett's engrossing story of medieval England\nduring the War of the Roses should appeal to fans of Sharon Kay\nPenman and Tracy Chevalier. Recommended for all public libraries.\n[See Prepub Alert, LJ 12/08.]-Makiia Lucier, Moscow, ID Copyright\n2009 Reed Business Information.\n\nPraise for Portrait of an Unknown Woman: 'Bennett's background\ndetail is impeccable -- part love story, part thriller, all\nexcellently imagined and written' The Times 'There is plenty to\nadmire and enjoy in Bennett's portrayal of a society convulsed by\nradical change!Vanora Bennett is a writer to watch' Times Literary\nSupplement 'Distinguished!Romance, intrigue and art history are\nconfidently blended, and Holbein canvases are afforded starring\nroles' Daily Mail 'If you want a classier-than-average romantic\nread, one contender is this fine historiccal debut, a 'Girl with a\nPearl Earring'-style tale' Sunday Times 'An atmospheric, passionate\nnovel set against a backdrop of religious and political upheaval'\nWoman and Home\n\nDuring the idyllic post-War of the Roses reign of Edward IV, two\ndaughters of a wealthy merchant take divergent roads to success and\npower in Bennett's solid historical. Isabel, widowed young,\nresolves to pursue her mother-in-law's silk business. Isabel's\nsister, Jane, becomes Edward's third mistress, a position of\ncomfort, though lacking in security. Isabel finds a lover of her\nown in Edward's brother, Richard, duke of Gloucester. When Edward\ndies suddenly and Richard makes a grab for the throne, the sisters\nmust make difficult choices to ensure their survival. Bennett\nimmerses readers at once in Yorkist England, and while the\nnarrative favors the dynamic Isabel over the flirtatious Jane, it's\neasy to root for them both. Readers of historical fiction will be\npleased with Bennett's sure-handed storytelling. (Apr.) Copyright\n2009 Reed Business Information.
