Dweck","description":"\u003cp\u003eNotes From Your Bookseller It's all in the mind-that's the takeaway from this and what a refreshing takeaway it is. When you believe in your ability to improve, you are in fact, more likely to improve. This book is here to ensure you have the right mindset. From the renowned psychologist who introduced the world to growth mindset comes this updated edition of the million-copy bestseller--featuring transformative insights into redefining success, building lifelong resilience, and supercharging self-improvement. Through clever research studies and engaging writing, Dweck illuminates how our beliefs about our capabilities exert tremendous influence on how we learn and which paths we take in life.--Bill Gates, GatesNotes It's not always the people who start out the smartest who end up the smartest. After decades of research, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., discovered a simple but groundbreaking idea: the power of mindset. In this brilliant book, she shows how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities. People with a fixed mindset--those who believe that abilities are fixed--are less likely to flourish than those with a growth mindset--those who believe that abilities can be developed. Mindset reveals how great parents, teachers, managers, and athletes can put this idea to use to foster outstanding accomplishment. In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. She introduces a phenomenon she calls false growth mindset and guides people toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset. She also expands the mindset concept beyond the individual, applying it to the cultures of groups and organizations. With the right mindset, you can motivate those you lead, teach, and love--to transform their lives and your own. Editorial Reviews A good book is one whose advice you believe. Sternberg, co-author of Teaching for Wisdom, Intelligence, Creativity, and Success An essential read for parents, teachers [and] coaches . . . as well as for those who would like to increase their own feelings of success and fulfillment.--Library Journal (starred review) Everyone should read this book.--Chip Heath and Dan Heath, authors of Made to Stick One of the most influential books ever about motivation.--Po Bronson, author of NurtureShock If you manage people or are a parent (which is a form of managing people), drop everything and read Mindset.--Guy Kawasaki, author of The Art of the Start 2.0 - From the Publisher Mindset is an established set of attitudes held by someone, says the Oxford American Dictionary. It turns out, however, that a set of attitudes needn't be so set, according to Dweck, professor of psychology at Stanford. Dweck proposes that everyone has either a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. A fixed mindset is one in which you view your talents and abilities as... well, fixed. In other words, you are who you are, your intelligence and talents are fixed, and your fate is to go through life avoiding challenge and failure. A growth mindset, on the other hand, is one in which you see yourself as fluid, a work in progress. Your fate is one of growth and opportunity. Which mindset do you possess? Dweck provides a checklist to assess yourself and shows how a particular mindset can affect all areas of your life, from business to sports and love. The good news, says Dweck, is that mindsets are not set: at any time, you can learn to use a growth mindset to achieve success and happiness. This is a serious, practical book. Dweck's overall assertion that rigid thinking benefits no one, least of all yourself, and that a change of mind is always possible, is welcome. Many of us believe one or more of these statements are true reflections of our innate abilities. Psychologist and researcher Dweck (Stanford Univ.), however, argues that attributes such as intelligence, personality, creativity, and talent are all a matter of our mind-sets, or our beliefs about ourselves. She posits that there are two basic mind-sets: fixed and growth. People with the fixed mind-set believe that everything about themselves is innate-e.g., that they are either smart or they're not, talented or not. Those with the growth mind-set, on the other hand, embrace challenges, struggles, criticism, and setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth rather than indications of failure. The good news is that mind-set, according to Dweck, can be changed from fixed to growth. This book is an essential read for parents, teachers, coaches, and others who are instrumental in determining a child's mind-set, and in turn, his or her future success, as well as for those who would like to increase their own feelings of success and fulfillment. Highly recommended for all libraries.-Wendy Wendt, Marshall-Lyon Cty. Lib., MN Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information. - Library Journal The author provides an instructive summary of how modern psychology looks at personal growth, learning, motivation, and performance. She clumps a variety of emotional and personality features into two types of people-those with fixed minds whose achievements are curtailed by low self-esteem and those who are more secure and welcome challenges, learning, and growth. She offers specific advice on how individuals and institutions can become more growth oriented. Dweck's optimism and lucid writing keep her research summaries and case histories from sounding too academic. Marguerite Gavin's performance hits all the marks and keeps the action moving with without any fussiness. Her warmth and connection with the author's message are obvious enough, but quick pacing and strident-sounding enunciation make the performance less pleasant to hear than it could have been. T.W.
