The Door to Time by Ulysses
Eleven-year-old twins Jason and Julia have just moved from London to an old mansion on the English coast. Their new home is filled with twisting tunnels and strange artifacts from around the world, and the twins can't wait to discover all its secrets. Before long, Jason, Julia, and their friend Rick stumble upon a mysterious-looking door hidden behind an old wardrobe. But none of the keys in the house will open it. What lies behind the door? And why has someone tried to conceal it? Jason, Julia, and Rick are determined to find out, no matter what it takes. Reviews Gr 5-8-Set on the English coast, Michael Merryweather's novel (Scholastic, 2006) follows 11-year-old twins, Jason and Julia, who've just moved into an old mansion on the British coast in which the title character once lived. Along with their new friend Rick, they uncover the secrets of a carved box found when Jason is rescued after a precarious fall off a nearby cliff. The only adult around is Nestor, the old caretaker, whose conversations with an unnamed person seem to point to Moore's continued presence. There are cryptic messages, unique keys, magical clay balls, and a strange door that their parents had covered. Once they open the door, they're on to dark tunnels, underground caverns, and an empty sailing ship moored in a lagoon with no visible outlet to the sea. Combining Jason's intuitions with Julia's boldness and Rick's pragmatism, the three overcome a variety of dangers and are about to be swept into a new time and place just as the book closes. Narrator Michael Page conveys the story's air of suspense and the personalities of the children. This is a real cliffhanger, and listeners will want to find out what happens in the next installment.-Barbara Wysocki, Cora J. Belden Library, Rocky Hill, CT Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information. Young listeners looking for a mysterious, slightly spooky adventure will have no qualms about following Page's assured lead into this fast-paced story, the first in a series. Kids will be sucked in by the initial tracks here, on which American editor Michael Merryweather has supposedly left an answering machine message for the publisher describing his dangerous efforts to find the elusive works of British author Ulysses Moore. The tale that follows is purportedly the translation of a Moore manuscript that appeared on Merryweather's doorstep, and was written in code. Eleven-year-old twins Julia and Jason Covenant and their family move into a mansion on the wild southwest coast of England and soon learn there's more to the estate-which was formerly owned by eccentric Ulysses Moore-than they had ever expected. Julia, Jason and their new friend Rick do some exploring and come upon doors and passageways with unknown secrets, surprises (and dangers?) lurking behind them. This set-up is a perfect dose of intrigue for listeners, and Page gives the proceedings just the right suspenseful-yet-inviting tone. Ages 10-up. (Jan.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
